Submarine incident bodes poorly for a nuclear fleet

Background  (History)

"Minor Malfunction on Board Alrosa Submarine Used to Undermine Russia’s Image" - PRAVDA, Nov. 24, 2009.

PREDICTION:
"For first world countries, even some Canadians should agree, a commissioned military submarine dead in the water must always be considered a MAJOR problem." -Vigilis, Nov. 24, 2009.

PROOF:

"The Alrosa submarine recently suffered an engine fire and almost sank. It is likely to be under repair for the foreseeable future." - Dr. Dmitry Gorenburg in the Davis Center for Russian and Eurasian Studies at Harvard University,  "Military significance of the Sevastopol basing agreement", April 28, 2010.

India's submarine INS Sindhurakshak (Current Event)

India's submarine INS Sindhurakshak received help from Egyptian Navy when it encountered extreme bad weather and rough sea on its way back home after mid-life up-gradation in Russia. The Sindhurakshak, a Russian Kilo Class submarine built in 1997 at Admiralteiskie Verfi shipyard in St Petersburg, underwent mid-life up-gradation.The Egyptian Navy towed the submarine to Port Said along the coast of the Mediterranean Sea in March, sources said.

PREDICTION:
If preparations for getting diesel subs underway cannot be reliably managed with better professionalism than reflected by the INF Sindhurakshak incident in March (submerged submarines are generally immune to 'bad weather') than operation of nuclear submarines, like Chakra, will undoubtedly prove more fateful, perhaps tragically so.  - Vigilis May 29, 2013.

PROOF:
(future events, near misses, or disasters to be announced)

Submarinea Mystery Officer Mickey Mouse Connection

Gleaned from the USS Sea Robin (SS-407) Log Book

See entry 09/26/97 17:30:41 GMT (Excerpt):    "Of note we had a LT (jg) by the name of Mike Ralston, who was Mike on the Mickey Mouse show." - Bob Gilmore (QMCM ss)

Sea Robin was decommissioned 1 October 1970.   The Mickey Mouse Club TV Series ran from 1955 to 1959. According to IMDB's cast directory  there had been a Michael A. Smith (1945-1982), who played himself (6 episodes in 1955) but no Mike Ralston.

Commander Michael G. Ralston was commissioned in 1967 as a NESEP graduate (University of Kansas). After completing submarine school, Ralston had served his initial tour as Communicator on board USS Sea Robin (SS 407).  - Source: http://www.ussholland.org/Charleston,S.C/Welcome%20Aboard%20Charleston%201983.pdf

Well, we are not faulting Master Chief (SS)'s memory. There are a few possibilities that would make his Mickey Mouse tale true. But, knowing submariners reputation (saved for a later post) our best guess of what really transpired regarding Lt (jg) Ralston on USS Sea Robin presents a slightly different picture (below).
What do you think? That's what we thought.

Tattooed people can donate blood sooner

"The Blood Alliance predicts this could increase its annual donor pool by 3 percent." - Source

The previous wait time was one year because of concerns about blood-borne pathogens, which can transmit diseases such as HIV and hepatitis, alliance spokeswoman Odette Struys said. The shorter wait time comes after regulation changes in Florida, where the alliance is based. ... As of January 2012, Florida was the last state among the three to require tattoo artists to have a license, which includes mandatory testing, hygiene standards and classes on how to prevent the spread of disease.

NewYork BloodCenter - if applied in NJ, no wait: If elsewhere, 12 months after application

American Red Cross  - Wait 12 months after a tattoo if the tattoo was applied in a state that does not regulate tattoo facilities.

Acceptable if the tattoo was applied by a state-regulated entity using sterile needles and ink that is not reused. Cosmetic tattoos applied in a licensed establishment in a regulated state using sterile needles and ink that is not reused is acceptable. There are 40 states that currently regulate tattoo facilities. You should discuss your particular situation with the health historian at the time of donation.
